BATD

Basic Aviation Training Device

A BATD is a ground-based training device that meets FAA requirements for basic instrument training. It must have functional controls and instruments but is not required to represent a specific aircraft type or provide motion. The bar is intentionally low: a BATD needs to be realistic enough to build instrument scan habits and practice procedures, not to replicate a specific airframe.

Students can log up to 2.5 hours of BATD time toward the 40-hour instrument rating flight time requirement under Part 61. It is most useful for procedural practice -- holds, approaches, partial panel flying -- in a low-cost environment before applying those skills in the actual aircraft. Compared to an AATD, the BATD allows fewer loggable hours but is less expensive to build and operate.
