Weather Datalink

Weather Datalink

In-Flight Weather Receiver

Weather datalink delivers real-time weather into the cockpit from two main sources. XM satellite weather requires a subscription but pulls data from SiriusXM weather satellites, giving broad coverage anywhere in the US including remote areas. ADS-B FIS-B is free and comes automatically with any ADS-B In receiver, but is only available within range of FAA ground stations, which covers most of the contiguous US at typical cruising altitudes.

For student pilots flying cross-countries, having live NEXRAD available in the cockpit is a real safety tool. Seeing where weather is actually building, rather than relying only on a preflight briefing from an hour ago, makes go or no-go decisions and in-flight diversions much easier to call correctly.
