About

Eagle Flight Squadron, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educational organization founded in 1975 by the late Reverend Russell R. White, an inductee into the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame. As an independent, after-school, voluntary enrollment program, Eagle Flight Squadron (EFS) trains our region’s youth to develop technical skills related to aviation. Students between the ages of thirteen and their high school graduation are given the opportunity earn their private pilot license before they graduate from high school. Many of our graduates have gone on to careers in aviation and other professional and technical fields. The EFS program is unique because it provides flight instruction, career development, social interaction, while stressing dignity, honesty and integrity. We also require the active participation of parents and guardians in support of their children’s goals and aspirations. Following admission at the beginning of the school year, students as young as 13 years old are tutored in public speaking, math, English, writing, and life skills as an adjunct to the aviation program. Their participation in marching drills along with the student-run command structure prepares them for community events, community service and local parades. Eagle Flight Squadron is not a military program but it does share the qualities of structure and discipline, which develop our students’ abilities to follow instructions, to give instructions, and to work as a team. In this supervised, program segment, students advance by military rank through an election process, and they must undergo regular scrutiny of their uniforms and report cards by peer commanders and staff. Many hundreds of students have passed through the program, have raised their grades in school, and have learned how to fly. EFS holds its ground school classes at our East Orange, NJ headquarters and gives flight instruction in our Cessna 150L, “Droopy” and our Cessna 172M, “Snoopy,” at Essex County Airport (KCDW).
