Instrument Flight Rules

Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) govern how aircraft operate in conditions where pilots cannot rely on visual references outside the cockpit. Flying IFR requires an instrument rating, specific avionics, and adherence to assigned routes and altitudes issued by ATC.

Most student pilots go after the instrument rating right after the private certificate. If that is your plan, schools with WAAS GPS and an autopilot-equipped aircraft give you much better tools to train with.
