IGI

An Instrument Ground Instructor is certificated to provide ground training and sign off students for the instrument rating knowledge test. The IGI covers instrument-specific subjects: IFR procedures, approach charts, airspace, weather interpretation, and cockpit resource management under IMC.

An IGI does not need to hold a CFII to provide instrument ground instruction — the IGI certificate is a standalone ground-only credential. In practice, many CFIIs also hold an IGI, but you may also find dedicated ground instructors at larger schools who specialize in instrument ground school without flying instructionally themselves.
